Is Pudding Rice much smaller?

Is it just me or is pudding rice much smaller in grain size today? It used to be called Carolina rice, now it is Italian; I find the smaller grains do not have the same absorbency; 2oz to a pint and a quarter of Jersey milk now turns out runny after 2 1/4 hours.
