At this time of year you can pick up a great bargain in supermarkets, farm shops or even your own garden, but delicate soft fruits like strawberries and raspberries need dealing with quickly. Peaches, plums and gooseberries are a little more robust but won't last too long, and you need to have a few recipes up your sleeve so as not to end up throwing them away. Strawberry Preserve, Blackcurrant Ice Cream, Raspberry Butter, Summer Fruit Compote and Preserved Pickled Peaches are all good recipes for large amounts of fruit. Delia's Plum or Damson Ketchup keeps indefinitely and Damson Chutney can be hidden away for 3 months.
